Discharging yourself from Hospital aginst medical advice
Anyone done it ?

Had chest pains last week (course I did, it was outside the box) and was sent up there.

After 6 hours, 2 ECGs, 2 blood pressure checks and giving a blood sample that's left my arm heavily bruised, I rejected their opinion that I should stay in overnight.

Quack was annoyed with me (not as much as my Parents and wife mind) but I wasn't trying to be a hard-man. Just hate HATE hospitals

Had to sign a waiver (gulp!) was it wise? Only time will tell I s'pose...

Irons.

I did it once when I was on morphine for post surgery pain and the morphine made me throw up. Not taking morphine wasn't an option but the throwing up worried them even though it was pretty obvious the vomiting was simply a reaction to the morphine and nothing to worry about (so long as I kept the fluids up etc...) Signed a waiver and that was that.

This time eight years ago I was getting occasional chest pains (mostly when lying down). They made it hard to get to sleep.
This went on for a few weeks until one night it was so bad I was convinced I was on the verge of a heart attack. So I went to the emergency department, and was admitted to hospital where I stayed for six days.

WORST decision I ever made, so you may have made the right choice, Troy.

Was it wise? Time will tell.

We (DOCTORS) are secretly relieved to be rid of you; but more importantly, your annoying Mrs.

Very interesting show on radio four last night was saying how actually this may the best thing for a lot of patients. The theory is that the more you challenge your body the more it responds

Paramedic here
I see (hope) you've taken on board most of the points on here.
Have a couple more.
Chest pain is a medical emergency........ Hence why you went to the Emergency department. In your chest are your heart and your lungs......serious problems with either of those and you're dead.
ECGs show a huge amount about what is go on in your heart..... but can't show everything.......... they are often very clear.....but often open to interpretation.
The definitive test for a heart attack is a blood test..... They measure the level of troponin......an enzyme given off by damaged heart muscle.
They take 2 samples....usually 2 or 4 hours apart to measure the level over a period of time.......hence why hospital often involves a lot of boring waiting around.
You didn't say how old you are, or whether you have any previous history.
But don't think you're invincible.
Went to a 50 year old today......normally fit and well.
Cardiac arrest.
Wasn't a successful resuscitation.

Re: Discharging yourself from Hospital aginst medical advice
Depends on your circumstances.
My cousin was told if he left hospital he would die and he still discharged himself to do exactly that within 20 hours of leaving.
He was very wrong to do so and his situation was grave yet he still thought he knew best, I wish I could have stopped him.
High temperature do not leave is one bit of advice I would give because it should not be fatal but if they tell you to stay it means it is serious enough.

Is that the one in Dartford? They missed my Uncles cancer for 8 months.

What should have been the size of a 50 p was the size of a five pound note when they found it. it had then spread to his lungs and stomach from his Kidney. something like that. anyway they missed it for months and poor sod is now hanging on fighting.
